At The Reading Foundation, we believe that every learner, no matter their age, deserves the tools and support to succeed. Whether you’re just beginning your educational journey or looking to strengthen long-standing skills, our programs are designed to meet you where you are and help you move forward with confidence.
Let’s take a closer look at the core programs we offer and how they support learners in meaningful, lasting ways.
Discover Reading©: Building Strong Foundations
Our most well-known program, Discover Reading, focuses on reading and spelling by addressing the root of where difficulties begin. Reading is taught the same way regardless of age, whether a student is 3 or 70, and it all starts with sounds.
This program uses a speech-to-print (linguistic phonics) approach, which builds on how we naturally learn spoken language. Instead of starting with letters, we begin with the sounds of speech (phonemes) and use them as the anchors for students to develop the ability to recognize sound to letter connections, as well as the ability to segment, blend and manipulate sounds, all of which allows for better storage and retrieval of the spellings of words.
This approach helps learners develop a solid foundation that supports lifelong literacy.
Discover Meaning©: Strengthening Comprehension
Understanding what you read is just as important as being able to read it. Discover Meaning is our comprehension program, grounded in the dual-coding framework.
This approach highlights the importance of combining:
- Written/oral processing
- Visual imagery
In other words, strong comprehension happens when students create a “mental movie” as they read or listen. This helps them retain information, stay engaged, and interpret and apply material more effectively.
In this program, students also learn practical strategies such as:
- Note-taking
- Identifying main ideas
- Question-and-answer techniques
All of these skills work together to deepen understanding and improve overall comprehension.
Discover Math©: Visualizing Numbers and Concepts
Math can be challenging, especially for students who struggle with numeracy, arithmetic, or word problems. Discover Math applies the principles of dual-coding to help students better understand mathematical concepts through visualization.
Students learn to create mental images (like picturing a number line and moving along it) to make abstract concepts more concrete.
Because math often overlaps with comprehension skills, this program also reinforces the ability to process and understand information more effectively, which is very helpful for word-problems!
Discover Writing©: Turning Ideas into Expression
Writing is about more than just putting words on paper. It starts with an idea. Discover Writing helps students transform their thoughts into clear, structured written work using the dual-coding approach.
Students begin by forming a mental image, then learn how to express it through language. Along the way, they develop skills in:
- Word selection (strong adjectives and adverbs)
- Sentence construction
- Paragraph and essay writing
- Grammar and spelling
By building from the word level up to full compositions, students gain confidence in their ability to communicate effectively.
What to Expect
Students attending our clinic can attend on a full-time (typically 12 to 20 hours of instruction per week) or part-time (customizable number of hours per week) basis until they complete their recommended program(s).
Sessions are structured in two- or four-hour blocks, with students rotating between clinicians each hour. This dynamic approach keeps learning engaging, fresh, and effective, helping students stay focused and motivated throughout their time with us.
