Staff Spotlight | Mar 29th, 18
The Reading Foundation is run by a talented team of professionals who are dedicated to helping students succeed and gain the skills to become life-long learners. Our Staff Spotlight is an opportunity to get to know the team and discover more about their roles at The Reading Foundation, their favourite books and their interests outside work.
Meet Darian, Assistant Director at our Toronto clinic, who has been with The Reading Foundation since 2012.
What is your role at The Reading Foundation?
As the Assistant Director in Toronto, my role varies but can include: teaching, team leading, assessing, attending school meetings and meeting with parents.
What is your favourite memory from your work at The Reading Foundation, and what is the most rewarding part of your job?
This is such a hard question to answer! One of my favourite memories would be when we moved into the Merton Street location. We didn’t know what the future held, but it was sure to be exciting and promising.
The most rewarding part of my job would have to be when students start to recognize their success and you can start to see their confidence grow.
Have you always enjoyed reading? If not, what eventually piqued your interest?
Ever since I can remember, my nose has been in a book.
What were your favourite school subjects in elementary and high school?
English and math were my favourite subjects in elementary school. Math seemed to remain as a favourite through high school; I liked how logical it was.
What was the last book you read and what was most memorable about it? What is your favourite book?
The last book I read was The Trespasser by Tana French. I was most surprised by my ability to mimic an Irish accent while reading. As for my favourite book, this is also a very hard question to answer! It’s either The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon or This Is All by Aidan Chambers.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of work?
Outside of reading, I love to travel and explore some of the amazing restaurants Toronto has to offer.
What three words would your best friend use to describe you?
Loyal, determined, considerate.
What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know?
I went to Brazil to watch the 2014 FIFA World Cup!
If you could choose one album to listen to, what would it be?
Earth, Wind and Fire - Greatest Hits
It’s time to take a vacation. Where are you going?
I just got back from Kenya! But, if it’s time to go on another vacation, I think Vietnam is next.
