Since founding The Reading Foundation in 1990 Steve continues to innovate – expanding our remediation programs across subjects, incorporating the latest research findings, and effectively integrating technology into our practice. His Ph.D. specializing in learning theory from the University of Calgary along with his extensive experience at all levels of the school system allow Steve to expertly assess student needs. As Founding Director of The Reading Foundation, Steve’s own love of learning is reflected in the enthusiasm and determination of both our staff and students.
Steve has authored several books, publications and research articles. In 2003 he was honored to be recognized among the top 100 graduates from the University of Calgary.
In his spare time, Steve enjoys reading, spending time with his grandchildren, playing tennis and other racquet sports, as well as his hobby as a singer/songwriter.
Alita is the dedicated and attentive Director of Operations for all three Reading Foundation clinics. As the clinic’s vibrant centre, Alita warmly welcomes everyone who comes through the doors. Everything that happens at the clinic pivots around her. In addition to efficiently managing all of the office’s daily activities – from accounting to all client and staff communication from behind the desk, Alita’s warm and caring style sets the tone at our clinics. Alita joined The Reading Foundation in 1999 as a clinician. Soon after, she was at our front desk in Calgary as the first point of contact for parents and students. She is likely to be the person who answers your telephone enquiries. One of her most important roles is to settle students’ first day jitters. Alita has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Calgary, has travelled and lived overseas and speaks both Spanish and French. When Alita isn’t managing things at one of our three offices, she is managing her three busy children.
In addition to her work as a clinician and a Team Leader at The Reading Foundation in Calgary since 2009, Carly is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists. She brings her warm and understanding manner to all of her work—whether she is working one-to-one with students or assessing them for their learning needs. Carly is highly qualified for her position, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary, as well as Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle. This open and genuine member of our team is many-faceted with interests in child and adolescent psychology and learning, travelling, outdoor recreation and spending time with friends and family.
Since The Reading Foundation opened its doors in 1990, Sabine has been a valuable member of our team. As one of Calgary’s Assistant Directors, Sabine’s conscientiousness allows her to skillfully assess students and guide them effectively through our programs. Sabine is a compassionate educator and connects meaningfully with each student she teaches. She is also an important contributor to the development of our remedial programs, Discover Meaning in particular.
Sabine’s first degree was a Bachelor of Arts in French with a minor in Linguistics. She later completed a Graduate Diploma in Educational Psychology with a specialization in guidance & counseling. An active mother of three teenaged children, Sabine loves music and hiking whenever she can find the time.
Ladean joined The Reading Foundation in 1993 as a clinician and quickly fell in love with the impact our programming and approach can make on students and families. Over the ensuing years, Ladean brought her passion for literacy and learning to the roles of team leader, scheduler, trainer and program developer. She continues to work one-to-one as a clinician, on our program development team as a writer/editor as well as on our social media efforts. Ladean studied Journalism and also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in English. She has two active teenaged girls who keep her busy, but when she does have time, Ladean loves reading and writing, as well as exploring all things culinary.
Since 2004, Amanda has been an asset to The Reading Foundation. Her adaptability, quick thinking and organization enable her to thrive as the Operations Manager for all three of our clinics. Although she can usually be found in Calgary, Amanda travels to our other two clinics to ensure the continuity of operations there. In addition to her duties as Operations Manager, Amanda currently oversees the human resources and community relations activities for The Reading Foundation’s clinics. She uses her many years of clinical experience to guide her in her diverse roles, and is always eager to share our clinic, staff and work with the community. Amanda holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Calgary, with a focus on child development. Outside of work, she can be found cooking something delicious in her kitchen or cheering on her two active sons in their many activities.
Jenn is the pleasant and efficient Administrative Lead in our Calgary office who has been a valuable member of our team since 2006. In addition to her many administrative duties which keep The Reading Foundation operating smoothly, Jenn spends much of her day communicating with parents and students, creating the weekly schedule and solving all computer crises. Jenn is a valuable math program developer and trains clinicians to work with our advanced math program. She also offers her expertise in compiling statistics for our special projects. After studying Engineering at the University of Calgary for three years, Jenn switched gears and earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees: one in English and one in Linguistics with a minor in Math. When she is not wearing one of her many hats at work, Jenn spends her time reading and studying computer programming and coding.
Jayelene is one of the Calgary clinic’s dedicated Team Leaders and has been with The Reading Foundation since 2000. In addition to being organized and conscientious in all areas of her work, Jayelene’s outgoing and energetic nature as well as a creative teaching style make her well loved by students. She played an important role in the development of Discover Reading’s Beginner Level. Jayelene has a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Calgary. Outside of The Reading Foundation, Jayelene has a passion for her own life-long learning, enjoys traveling and her busy life with her young son.
As a Team Leader at the Calgary clinic, Josh manages student programs and monitors progress with great attention to detail. His students benefit greatly from the kindness and humour he brings to each hour. Josh is also passionate about writing and has contributed this skill to the development of our Discover Meaning program, writing much of the curriculum content. He has worked at The Reading Foundation since 2007 and has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Calgary. Josh keeps his math skills sharp by following professional sports statistics and enjoys playing hockey when he isn’t working or spending time with his wife and three young sons.
Since 2006, Bethany has been a cheerful and diligent member of our staff. Her careful and caring teaching style allowed her to excel as a clinician. Now as a Team Leader, Bethany confidently leads each student through their programs. Her own love of learning drives her teaching and she eagerly shares this enthusiasm with her students. Bethany has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English from the University of Calgary. Outside of the office, you will still find Bethany with her nose in a book, reading anything from Shakespearean plays to the latest young adult fiction.
Chelsea began working for The Reading Foundation in 2014, and is a valuable member of our team. She has taken on many roles at the clinic, including Office Coordinator, Scheduler and Staff Liaison Personnel, but Chelsea finds being a Team Leader the most rewarding because she enjoys watching her students’ skills and confidence grow throughout their time at The Reading Foundation. Chelsea has a Bachelor of Science, with distinction, in Psychology from the University of Calgary. Outside of her time at the clinic, she keeps very busy by singing in a women’s barbershop show chorus that competes internationally, and going to concerts by 80s bands.
Since 2014, Linsey has been an asset to the Calgary team, taking on the roles of Team Leader and Trainer, as well as leading our preschool camps. Linsey enjoys working with her students the most, as she finds it amazing to watch them develop a love for learning. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English, as well as a Bachelor of Education, specializing in Secondary English. When she's not working, Linsey enjoys reading, yoga and trying new restaurants, as well as spending time with her partner and French bulldog, Smudge.
As a Team Leader, Ala finds organizing student programs, monitoring their progress, and seeing their final results a very rewarding experience. She appreciates being part of students’ learning journeys and strives to give them the gift of knowledge. Ala has a Bachelor of Biological Sciences with a minor in Psychology from the University of Calgary and is currently enrolled in a Masters of Education program, specializing in Educational Leadership at Yorkville University. She focuses the research in her Masters program on further enriching the comprehension program taught at the Reading Foundation. Outside of the clinic, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her fiancé, doing hot yoga, and reading and writing poetry.
